If It Feels Like Too Much… It Probably Is

Accepting help is hard enough… but asking for it? That’s a whole other level.

I don’t know if it’s an eldest daughter thing or a mix of personality and life experiences, but I’ve always leaned toward being fiercely independent. I talked in another email about learning to accept help when it’s offered, and believe me, that's been a process. But seeking it out? Actually saying “I need support”? That’s something I’ve avoided for a long time.

After interviewing Allegra Gast for the podcast, something in me shifted. Her honesty about asking for help, even just for short seasons, stayed with me. I realized I’d been telling myself “I’ve got it” for so long, I didn’t know how to admit I didn’t.

So I did the thing. I started searching for a babysitter who could give me a bit of space, a little reprieve. I spent the whole summer interviewing sitters and no one felt quite right. I was discouraged, honestly. But then, just last week, I met someone who clicked with my kids right away. She only stayed for an hour to play, but when she left, I knew in my gut I could’ve trusted her with them that very day if I needed to.

It felt empowering. Hopeful. Like maybe I don’t have to carry it all, all the time.

This episode with Allegra is about so much more than asking for help. It’s about giving yourself what you need to stop making life harder than it has to be.

Allegra's coming back next week to share simple ways to boost your energy and feel more like yourself again. Because being a mom shouldn’t mean starting every day already depleted.
